2013 In Review

So, 2013 has come and gone. This marks a full year of helping to run designing 12 issues as well as bringing it back to print, but that’s not all that was done.

Some professional things accomplished in 2013:

  1. Running
I attended tekX in 2010, spoke at tek12 and now I co-own and help run the damn thing! Crazy
  2. Designed My First Tech Book
Laying out the SPL book was a learning experience. Though, happy with it, there are things I’ll do differently in future books.
  3. Continued and Expanded Our Local Tech Meetup
The Frederick Web Technology Meetup has been running since July 2009 and now has over 300 members. We are now meeting at Cowork Frederick. Also, Eli has stepped up and is running the Beverage Subgroup.
  4. My Better Half and I Have Started A Design Meetup
Cathy and I have started a design meetup for AIGA Blue Ridge called “The Essentials Series.” Because there were no local design meetups in the area (incredible)!
  5. I’ve Become a Board Member of AIGA Blue Ridge
This is part of running the Essentials Series. Both Cathy and I are board members and contribute ideas monthly.

Some personal things accomplished in 2013:

  1. Trying To Be The Best Dad I Can Be to My #1son
I haven’t achieved it to my liking, but I’m getting there!
  2. Trying To Be The Best Husband and Friend to Cathy
While I’m better, I still need work. However, I have never been more in Love with her than I am now
  3. 2013 In Review20th Wedding Anniversary
October 30th, 2013 marked the 20th anniversary of the words I’ve never regretted saying: “I will.” We spent a weekend in Gettysburg. Rode our bicycles on the battlefield and had romantic meals
  4. Or First Cruise
20 years and never did a cruise- that changed in July. We had an absolute blast- all 3 of us! We went on a 7 day cruise from Baltimore to the Bahamas.
  5. Getting In Shape
I lost and gained 10 pounds, but overall lost fat.
  6. Tried working at a dumpster company

I worked at a dumpster company and thought I could get some decent experience in what life is like when youre not behind a computer all day. I applied to Dumpster Rental Buffalo and realized what they do is hard work. Renting out those dumpsters and moving them is definitely a workout.

One thing I have learned from mistakes made in 2013- learn to say “no” to every opportunity that comes along. As you can imagine from the list above, my time has been greatly taken up. 2014 may actually became “the year of simplification.” We shall see.
